On the Solovetsky Islands islands in the White Sea near Russia are 14 stone spiral labyrinths.
The entrances to the labyrinths are mostly from the south.
Some researchers say they are 2500 years old, others date them from the middle ages.
There are conflicting theories about their origin. In the 1970’s the predominant hypotheses was they were traps for fish. (Of course, there are numerous ancient spiral labyrinths that are not on the ocean, and this is a very utilitarian and materialistic point of view.)
A more reasonable recent theory been related to religious and spiritual beliefs, a border and entrance between the outer world and the underworld, traps for malevolent spirits, defined paths for ritual dances.
“This suggestion is consistent with widely held belief among prehistoric cultures in the theory of ‘Three Worlds’, according to which ancient people thought that the Universe was separated into a Lower World, where souls of the deceased would go after death, the Middle World, consisting of the physical plane of existence, and the Upper World of the stars, clouds, and gods.”
